History of Alcoholics Anonymous in Costa Rica

There is a book published in more recent history of AA in Costa Rica titled "Alcoholics Anonymous in Costa Rica. History of a community and a structure" . Can be purchased at the Office of General Services (Calles 7 and 9 Avenida 12. 100 meters south and 75 west of Aqueducts and Sewers, San Jose, Phone (506) 2222-5224, Hours: 9 am to 6 pm Monday to Friday and from 8 to 11 am Saturdays). AA groups also have it for sale. The book was approved by the National Delegates Conference of August 2008.

AA's history in our country starts on January 23, 1959 at a meeting held at the home of teammate Jorge M., which was attended by Francisco R. (Mexican who knew the program), Luis H., Jorge M., Abel D., Manuel R., Joseph S., Jesus D., Isidro R., Joseph M., Joseph C., Johnny G. and Ricardo R. The group is traditionally called No. 1 and later changed its name to the San José.

As background to its establishment have the work done by the Commission on Alcoholism since 1955, a state entity, in the treatment of alcoholics and the formation of group therapy were not involved as autonomous professional staff of the agency. AA is formed when several members who attended meetings in the CSA decided to implement the 12 traditions of AA and form an autonomous group with the participation only of alcoholics.

Some of the first groups formed was the Rotary Family 10A and 10B, the 4M60 in the canton of Abandoned founded on March 4, 1960 and currently in operation, which is the oldest group in the country AA . On February 3, 1961 the group was formed Renaissance Guadalupe, also currently active. On May 17, 1962 the group was formed San Isidro in Perez Zeledon, who was the first to place a sign on your local saying "Group of Alcoholics." In the first 5 years existence of AA in Costa Rica and 14 groups were formed in July 1968 and there were 90 groups. In 2006, when it ended the same book, operating in the country a total of 780 groups (p. 97).
