Hark The trip hallucinated
First published in the magazine Skorpio twenty years ago, the work of Eduardo Mazzitelli and Quique Alcatena continues to produce an enjoyable surprise: a wonderful combination of fertile ideas and illustrations that further extend over the universe. By Andres Valenzuela
How many ideas fit on a single page comic? How many concepts that merit an entire book can drop a writer ... in two cartoons? No matter what the initial response, it is necessary to revise it after reading the liquid steel, a stunning series originally published in the magazine Skorpio two decades ago and now collected in a single volume of nearly 300 pages, thanks to a co-publication between nicoleña-porteños LocoRabia and Uruguayans Bellerophon Group.
Usually, any story involving such forces Quique Alcatena fascinated with his drawings. But this time his work-an enormous bill, no doubt pales prodigality Eduardo Mazzitelli ideas that loose, as he does not like things, making them parade before the reader's eyes, only to choose one and develop in each chapter. Wonder how the writer can conceive in a cartoon fantasy realms of those who harbor many adventures and why many of his colleagues would be killed.
The series tells the story of Hark, a sort of mountebank rebel, rebellious and profligate whom the governor of a city-state capture and undergoes a torturous experiment. Hark becomes a callous warrior molten metal. From there follows the first mental slavery, liberation and the path then overwhelmed by a totally fantastic world.
When he came out originally, Liquid Steel was a recurring series without a fixed plan. That is, the pair began working with no idea when or even if culminate survive the first encounter with the public. Maybe that's why his pages abound in both the proposals cool, lost, impossible and hallucinated. Mazzitelli seems that going through a stage of creative ferment that could satisfy only volcano in the script almost compulsively. The result is a narrative that at first glance seems very organic, but that basically keeps a very strong theme from multiple reflections on the ethics of power and knowledge.
The script complete with a series of strong supporting characters, sometimes gain more relevance than the protagonist himself. There is hybrid, a sidekick who looks like a harbinger of entropy. O sages who added a letter to his name every time you get double your knowledge and fight each other to gain supremacy over their peers. There are also madramanes, prodigious in disgrace; Report, which can predict the future because he knows all the past, and Sibilla, who can only love a man unhappy.
But Hark has a sort of sidekick and Hybrid, which sometimes helps, sometimes gets him into trouble and sometimes it raises existential Mazzitelli himself he has a sidekick role. Alcatena makes this insane mental journey of a hallucination Mazzitelli graphics that not only resist and hold the proposals of the dash (at particularly difficult to illustrate), but also the power. Makes me dizzy at times think that Liquid Steel was not the only series that was at that time Alcatena. Vertigo imagine that could translate such difficult concepts with such ease, almost making them seem simple while others had to face work. But I could. The result could not be better.
